My approach
My approach to treating clients encompasses elements of Psychoanalytic Therapy and Internal Family Systems and utilizes a bottom up approach.
What is a Bottom up Approach?
Bottom-up therapy approaches in mental health focus on addressing symptoms and concerns by starting with bodily sensations, emotions, or sensory experiences before delving into thoughts and cognition. These approaches often emphasize the interconnectedness of the mind and body and aim to regulate the nervous system's response to stress or trauma. Some common bottom-up therapies include: Somatic Experiencing (SE): This approach focuses on physical sensations and helps individuals release pent-up trauma or stress stored in the body. It involves tracking bodily sensations to promote healing. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing): While it involves elements of both top-down and bottom-up processing, EMDR incorporates bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements) to help process traumatic memories and reduce their emotional impact. Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT): Though not exclusively bottom-up, these practices involve cultivating present-moment awareness, which can positively impact physical sensations and emotions, contributing to overall mental health. Yoga and Tai Chi: These practices combine physical movement, breath-work, and mindfulness, promoting relaxation and reducing stress by focusing on the body's sensations.
Bottom-up approaches are often used in conjunction with top-down approaches (like cognitive-behavioral therapy) for a more comprehensive treatment plan. They can be particularly beneficial for individuals who struggle to express their emotions verbally or those whose trauma is stored somatically in their bodies.
What is Psychoanalytic Approach?
Psychoanalytic therapy is a form of therapeutic treatment that was developed by Sigmund Freud. It focuses on exploring unconscious thoughts and emotions in order to understand and resolve mental and emotional issues. This type of therapy emphasizes the role of early childhood experiences in shaping current behavior and seeks to uncover underlying conflicts and repressed feelings. Through techniques such as free association and dream analysis, psychoanalytic therapy aims to bring repressed thoughts and feelings to the surface and provide insight into how past experiences continue to influence present emotions and behaviors.
What is an IFS Approach?
Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy, also known as parts work, is a therapeutic approach that helps individuals explore and understand their inner mental system. This approach suggests that the mind is composed of various "parts," each with its own unique characteristics, emotions, and motivations. By acknowledging and interacting with these internal parts, individuals can gain insight into the underlying conflicts and dynamics within themselves, leading to improved emotional regulation and overall well-being.
